Unit-Level Web Page Standards

This set of page standards follows the Web Pages & Applications Representing College Units Protocol (PDF) and applies to pages under that protocol’s purview. Exceptions to these standards may be made if strategically and/or technologically warranted.

  • Web pages will have page titles that follow the format:
    • Area landing page: UNIT NAME | Monroe Community College | Rochester, NY
    • Area interior pages: Page Name | UNIT NAME | Monroe Community College
  • Pages will have a natural-language URL.
  • Pages will include a 150-character page description.
  • Pages will be in compliance with ADA standards.
  • Pages will be responsive and mobile-friendly.
  • Filenames will follow MCC’s web/digital file naming conventions.

Navigation

  • Each unit’s individual set of web pages will have a section-specific main navigation. The main navigation will include the designated primary, or “parent,” navigation items as outlined below, and each parent navigation item may also show up to 5 sub, or “child,” navigation items upon rollover/click.
  • A section’s main navigation should link primarily to pages within that same section/area. Main navigation at any level (parent or child) does not link to downloadable documents or e-mail addresses.
  • Every page in a section’s web presence should be accessed from some level of the main section navigation.
    • On the Admissions home page, “I am” is primary and “First Time College Student” is sub-navigation:

  • Links to pages within the section’s web presence should open in the same tab/window. Links to pages outside the section’s web presence should open in a new tab/window.
  • Navigation tips:
    • As your site has grown, are the most important pages still near the top? Review your page order whenever you make changes.
    • Consider combining pages when two pages have scant information on them.
    • Consult with Marketing & Web to review your site so it is organized and focused.

Content

  • Units will be responsible for the content of their pages.
  • Content will be created and posted with a focus primarily on the external audience.
    • Develop good content that is concise, engaging and useful to your audience.
  • Images used in pages will contain alternative text (“alt-text”).
  • Content (text & images) will be used within copyright allowances and guidelines. If copyright permissions for a specific image are unclear, it will not be used.
  • Pages may not advertise, endorse, link to or include logos for for-profit or external entities anywhere on www.monroecc.edu. Exceptions may be made with service or non-profit organizations with whom MCC has a partnership or memorandum of understanding. Pages may credit an external entity as a source of information or copyright owner.
  • Grammar, spelling, and punctuation must be consistent and correct, as per the AP Stylebook, Merriam-Webster Dictionary, MCC Named Facilities Guide, and any other stylistic standards set by MCC’s Marketing and Community Relations Department.
  • Consistency
    • Majors & Programs information across the site will link to or feed from central, approved program pages as found in the College’s main Academics section.
    • Campus location, direction and map information across the site will link to the appropriate section in the College’s central Location & Maps pages.
    • Each section’s landing page will include that unit’s main email address, physical location, and phone number.
  • Downloadable documents will be in PDF format unless another format is required for interactivity. Images will be in .jpg or .gif format.
  • Downloadable documents will open in in a new window/tab.
