Travels with Tiberius Special Edition: SGA Receives SUNY Award

Tiberius headed to Syracuse with nine members of the Student Government Association for the SUNY Student Assembly Fall Leadership Conference, knowing a secret—they were going to come home with an award!
The MCC SGA received the SUNY Student Assembly President’s Award for Civic Engagement. Jodi Oriel, Student Life Advisor, nominated MCC’s SGA for their extraordinary work with voter registration and engagement for the 2024 election. Members of the SGA led by Jodi and Mark Sample, the faculty advisor, include:

Some of the activities SGA participated in which led to their award include but are not limited to:
- From the theme “Be Counted: Voting Is Your Right,” they created a QR code that led the MCC Community to the SUNY Turbo Vote tile featured on the myMCC Website. The code was sent to all students and displayed on posters throughout campus.
- They organized informational tables every day, from the first day of classes until Election Day, which included laptops to register students to vote.
- They held watch parties for the debates and election night when the results came in.
- SGA partnered with the Political Science department to engage the student body in deliberative dialogue events leading to Election Day.
Along with the award presentation, the SGA and other conference attendees celebrated the 50th Anniversary of the SUNY Student Assembly. Dr. Christina Lee and Senator Elizabeth Cole also presented “How Culturally Responsive Campuses Can Increase a Sense of Belonging: Examples from Monroe Community College” at the conference.
