Financial aid available for qualified individuals seeking careers as advanced manufacturing technician and medical office assistant
ROCHESTER, N.Y. – As advanced manufacturing businesses reopen and the demand for medical professionals continues, two job-training fast-track programs offered at Monroe Community College are ready to prepare individuals for careers as a medical office assistant and a machinist technician.
Participants in MCC’s Accelerated Precision Tooling Certificate Program and Medical Office Assistant Program may be eligible for financial aid, due in part to funding support from Monroe County. Scholarship awards are also available.
— The six-month Accelerated Precision Tooling Certificate Program enables unemployed and underemployed Finger Lakes region residents to gain education and hands-on training in advanced manufacturing, earn a certificate in 23 weeks, and receive wraparound supports and career services.
Classes begin June 8 and are scheduled in the evenings, with the first 11 weeks to be completed via remote learning. The second half of the program, in which participants gain hands-on learning, is scheduled to begin in the fall 2020 semester at a location to be announced at a later date.Precision machining skills are historically in high demand in the Finger Lakes region. Of those who completed the program over the past six years, over 80 percent received job offers from advanced manufacturers or continued their education. Launched in 2013 in response to the advanced manufacturing industry’s immediate need for skilled workers, the program will start its 11th class in June.
Graduates can begin their careers as computer-controlled machine tool operators, machinists, and first-line production supervisors.— Participants in MCC’s 10-month Medical Office Assistant Certificate Program learn specialized health care record-keeping procedures and use the same high-tech computer systems found in today’s medical offices. In addition to developing strong technical skills, students learn to effectively communicate with patients and health care professionals and gain introductory knowledge of biology, medical terminology, drugs and emergency care. The program is cohort-based, allowing participants to attend every class together for the duration of the program. The model is focused on building a tight-knit learning community of peers who use one another as resources and collaborate on projects and in discussions.Graduates can begin their careers in hospitals, private practices and dental clinics as administrative assistants, medical records and health information technicians, and medical record coders.Classes begin in the fall 2020 semester at a location to be announced at a later date. Deadline to register is Aug. 19. Financial aid for qualified individuals and wraparound supports—including career services—are available through MCC and community partners.
