2026 Graduate Profile: KhaNy Sangasy

May 26, 2026

The Tom Hope Media Scholar Program, in memory of Rochester-area media icon Tom Hope, recognized six outstanding media production students from Rochester-area colleges, including MCC second-year student KhaNy Sangasy. Sangasy received an award for her video entitled “Mother and Daughter: An Immigrant Story.”

The idea for the short documentary-style video wasn’t difficult for her to come up with. “I knew I had a special opportunity to capture a personal story about my mom and grandma immigrating here to the US from Vietnam. It felt important to capture a story that hasn’t been told before,” said Sangasy.

KhaNy graduated from Brockport High School in 2023. She began her collegiate career at the Rochester Institute of Technology, where she studied game design and was on the swim team. Sanga

sy decided to transfer to MCC to make sure film and video was the career she wanted to pursue, and she wanted to go to a school where she could continue swimming.

When asked if she would recommend MCC to others, KhaNy said, ”100%, a million times yes. I would stay here if this was a 4-year institution. I tell everyone that I wish I had more time here because I feel like I’m not done. The support here is unmatched, diverse communities, whether it’s age, identities, or ethnicities, and so many opportunities for the students to network, further their careers, and more.”

KhaNy will graduate from MCC in May, after which she will transfer to Ithaca College in the Fall to pursue its Television, Photography, and Digital Media program. She also has some other projects in the works that she said will keep her busy, active, and having fun, much like the animal she said her spirit most closely resembles, a sea lion. “I feel like they’re so goofy and weird, and I feel like that’s lowkey me.”
