More Than 1,800 MCC Students to Earn Degrees and Certificates

Monroe Community College’s 58th annual Commencement ceremony this week will be a virtual celebration for the more than 1,800 graduates who will earn degrees and certificates as members of the MCC class of 2021.

Graduates, family members, friends and the community at large may participate in the ceremony, scheduled for 7 p.m. Thursday, May 20, via a link <https://monroecc.stageclip.com>. Virtual walks across the stage will be held to recognize graduates within their Schools.

Featured speakers for the event will include MCC President Dr. DeAnna R. Burt-Nanna, Acting Vice President of Student Services Dr. Kimberly McKinsey-Mabry ’95 who will deliver the “Message to the Graduates,” student keynote speaker Soleil Williams, and MCC Board of Trustees Chairperson Allen K. Williams.

Congratulatory greetings to the graduates will also come from elected officials and community leaders, including U.S. Sen. Chuck Schumer, Monroe County Executive Adam Bello, Rochester Mayor Lovely Warren, and SUNY Trustee and Greater Rochester Chamber of Commerce President and Chief Executive Officer Bob Duffy.

MCC’s newest graduates will apply their MCC education to the local workforce and to advanced studies at area colleges. Among them:

Evan Baldwin, who immersed himself in the world of precision machining throughout his years at MCC and will receive an associate degree on May 20. His achievements likely will also be recognized by his employer, a Rochester advanced manufacturing company where he has worked as a full-time CNC operator since April.

Byron Wah

Byron Wah, who will earn a business administration degree and continue his studies in accounting at SUNY Brockport this fall. Currently a staff accountant for an Ogden company since March, he plans to eventually become a certified public accountant, return to Utah and give back to the Navajo community that nurtured his dreams.

FACT SHEET ON MCC CLASS OF 2021

Facts to know about MCC’s class of 2021 members include:

  • A majority (approximately 62 percent) of the graduates plan to transfer to four-year colleges and universities to continue their education.
  • Approximately 38 percent of the graduates already started their careers or plan to enter the workforce upon graduation.
  • Approximately 73 percent of graduates who continue their education do so at a SUNY/CUNY institution. *
  • Of career and certificate program graduates who are employed full time, approximately 93 percent work in Monroe or an adjacent county. *
  • Nearly 40 percent of the graduates will be first in their family to earn a college degree.
  • Approximately 36 percent are students who started their college education, took a semester or more off, and later returned to college to complete their studies.
  • Approximately 18 percent of the graduates are student-parents.
  • The most popular fields of study are:
  1. Liberal Arts and Sciences – General Studies
  2. Business Administration
  3. Nursing
  4. Psychology
  5. Criminal Justice
