MCC Holds Celebration of Scholars’ Day Inside Homes Across Finger Lakes Region

May 26, 2020

Original, creative and scholarly works of over 50 students will be exhibited online for campus community to view; event includes tech demos, research presentations, culinary experience

Over 50 Monroe Community College students will showcase their original research and creative works in the college’s first-ever virtual Scholars’ Day, scheduled for May 27 through June 3.

Unlike the past 11 years when MCC hosted a daylong program of poster exhibits and oral presentations in classrooms and campus spaces filled with guests, this year students have uploaded videos of their at-home presentations and images of their posters online for MCC members and their families to view.

Scholars’ Day is one of MCC’s highly attended events, with 140 presenters across disciplines competing for awards last year. The event provides a platform for students, faculty and staff to showcase their outstanding creative and scholarly works such as research and writing projects, theatrical performances, exhibits, symposia, panel discussions and robotics demonstrations.

Some of this year’s presentation topics include:

  • Bridges to Better Living: Encouraging Wellness in the Rochester Community
  • Drones designed and built by students
  • The Villain is the Hero of his own Story
  • Thinking Small to Fight Big: Understanding Evolutionary Biology to Help Us Fight Disease

Presentations are judged on originality, creativity, and the scholars’ depth of understanding of the topic. Top presenters are eligible for $25,000 in scholarships, thanks to Monroe Community College Foundation supporters and the ESL Charitable Foundation. Scholarship recipients will be announced Wednesday, June 3, on MCC’s website.
