Over 50 High School Students to Seal Deals with Area Employers through New Apprenticeship Program

January 21, 2020

WHAT: Amid shows of support from their families, 37 Monroe County high school students will gather to sign letters of intent for co-op employment and job-shadowing placements at area advanced manufacturing companies in spring 2020.

Hosted by Monroe Community College, signing day follows December’s matching day event in which the 11th– and 12th-graders from Edison Career and Technology High School, Monroe One BOCES, and Monroe 2-Orleans BOCES completed interviews with over 13 employers and were matched with opportunities the companies offered. Upon completing work-based opportunities, high school students can earn college credits toward an apprenticeship program and degree in advanced manufacturing from MCC.

The events are part of the new Finger Lakes Youth Apprenticeship Program, a collaboration between MCC and Rochester Technology and Manufacturing Association (RTMA). The program’s goal is to link more high school students to career technical education and increase awareness of apprenticeship pathways to help fill the talent gap impacting the Finger Lakes region.

WHERE: Warshof Conference Center, R. Thomas Flynn Campus Center (Monroe A) on MCC’s Brighton Campus, 1000 E. Henrietta Road; parking is provided in lot M.

WHEN: 5:30-8:30 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 28. Inclement weather date: Thursday, Jan. 30.

Event schedule:
5:30-6 p.m. — Remarks from representatives of RTMA, MCC and RG&E
6 p.m. — Announcement of participating students

DETAILS: The Finger Lakes Youth Apprenticeship Program extends beyond Monroe County. To date, a total of 51 regional high school students will gain co-op and job-shadowing opportunities at 21 advanced manufacturing companies across Western New York in spring 2020.

A signing day on Feb. 26 is scheduled for nine Orleans/Niagara BOCES high school seniors who were matched with nine employers for co-op employment and job-shadowing opportunities in spring 2020.

The Finger Lakes Youth Apprenticeship Program is supported by a grant from the Ralph C. Wilson, Jr. Foundation with additional funding from RTMA and RG&E.
