Pathways to Success: PTK Transfer Readiness

The College Project is a key initiative within Phi Theta Kappa that encourages chapters to collaborate with their college administration to address a critical campus need. Through research, planning, and action, chapters develop projects that support institutional goals while fostering student success and engagement.

This year, the Alpha Theta Iota chapter focused on improving transfer success at Monroe Community College. Many MCC students, particularly those balancing work and family responsibilities, struggle to access essential transfer resources. Currently, only 23% of students graduate within three years, and just 15% successfully transfer to four-year institutions. To address this, our chapter developed Transfer Readiness, a comprehensive, 24/7 accessible program housed within the Brightspace Learning Management System.

In collaboration with Rebecca Mack, MCC’s Lead Transfer Advisor; Dr. Ryan Messenger, Associate Vice President of Student Affairs; and Andrea Gilbert, Director of Virtual Campus, we designed a platform featuring custom-recorded videos, step-by-step guides, and integrated tools like SUNY Program Search and College Navigator. Organized into four modules—Researching, Connecting, Planning, and Applying—the program provides students with structured guidance throughout the transfer process.

Transfer Readiness aligns with MCC’s Vision 2027: Student-Centered College and directly supports Goal 2.1 of reducing and eliminating barriers to student success. By working closely with MCC leadership, our chapter strengthened campus partnerships and demonstrated a shared commitment to student achievement. Designed as a lasting initiative, this program will continue evolving to support future students and improve transfer success for years to come.
