Before you publish, make sure your multimedia content has the right accessibility aids.<\/p>\n<p>Per <a title=\"Opens external link in new window\" href=\"https:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/UNDERSTANDING-WCAG20\/media-equiv.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer\">WCAG 2.0 Standards regarding multimedia<\/a> and <a title=\"Opens external link in new window\" href=\"https:\/\/www.suny.edu\/accessibility\/eit\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer\">SUNY Electronic &amp; Information Technology (EIT) Accessibility Web Accessibility Standards<\/a>, all multimedia must:<\/p>\n<ul>\n\t<li>Provide <a title=\"Directs viewer to section on this page\" href=\"#captions\">synchronized captions<\/a> for public-facing audio-video content<\/li>\n\t<li>Provide <a title=\"Directs viewer to section on this page\" href=\"#transcripts\">transcripts<\/a> for audio-only content<\/li>\n\t<li>Provide <a title=\"Directs viewer to section on this page\" href=\"#audiodesc\">audio descriptions<\/a> for audio-video and video-only content.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The State of Nevada provides an informative breakdown of <a title=\"Opens external link in new window\" href=\"https:\/\/ada.nv.gov\/Training\/Multimedia_Requirements\/#:~:text=W.C.A.G%202.1%20requires%20all%20prerecorded,is%20required%20for%20multimedia%20files.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer\">multimedia requirements by media type<\/a>. Another resource is <a title=\"Opens external link in new window\" href=\"https:\/\/dcmp.org\/learn\/captioningkey\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer\">Caption Key<\/a>, which provides &#8220;guidelines and best practices for captioning educational video.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>W3C Web Accessibility Initiative (WAI) created a video, &#8220;<a title=\"Opens video in new window\" href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/4qIordU8vT8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer\">Video Captions &#8211; Audio Described Version<\/a>,&#8221; which is a great example of using both captions and audio descriptions to inform the audience of what is being communicated in the video.<\/p>\n<h2><a id=\"captions\"><\/a>Captions<\/h2>\n<p>Captions enable people who can&#8217;t hear to enjoy your video. They also help visitors who don&#8217;t understand spoken English or the speaker&#8217;s accent. They also give everyone convenient options such as watching the video on mute or watching, listening and reading at the same time.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>All videos posted on monroecc.edu must have captions. If your video is hosted on Vuja or an official MCC YouTube channel, take advantage of its auto-captioning features but then <strong>edit the captions<\/strong> for accuracy. No auto-captioning job is perfect. They also come in handy for skimming content quickly and for visitors who aren&#8217;t native English speakers.<\/p>\n<p>Be sure to check out the training guides created by Stony Brook University for <a title=\"Opens external link in new window\" href=\"https:\/\/www.stonybrook.edu\/celt\/design-teach\/accessibility\/video-accessibility-guides.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer\">adding captions and transcripts to YouTube and Zoom videos<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2><a id=\"audiodesc\"><\/a>Audio Descriptions<\/h2>\n<p>Important parts of a video can be totally visual, without dialogue. That&#8217;s where audio descriptions come in.<\/p>\n<p>When your character smiles, walks toward her car, or pours liquid into a beaker, she probably won&#8217;t say so. An audio description (or a transcript) conveys actions like this so people who can&#8217;t see the video can still experience it. Think of audio descriptions as alternate (alt) text for video.<\/p>\n<p>Audio descriptions can also help second language learners, and people with cognitive impairments or autism spectrum disorders.<\/p>\n<p>W3C Web Accessibility Initiative&#8217;s <a title=\"Opens external link in new window\" href=\"https:\/\/www.w3.org\/WAI\/media\/av\/description\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer\">Audio Description of Visual Information<\/a> gives several options for incorporating audio descriptions in your videos.
