Accessibility is fundamental to MCC&#8217;s core values and we are committed to making our websites accessible.<\/p>\n<p>In 2021, there were a record-setting <strong>4,055 lawsuits<\/strong> regarding inaccessible websites! Below are some resources to learn more about website accessibility lawsuits.<\/p>\n<ul>\n\t<li>&#8220;<a title=\"Opens video in new window\" href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/YnTgkImTly4?t=1329\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer\">Current Digital Accessibility Litigation Landscape and Increased DOJ Enforcement of Title III of the ADA (Video)<\/a>,&#8221; Deque Systems<\/li>\n\t<li>&#8220;<a title=\"Opens webpage in new window\" href=\"https:\/\/www.adatitleiii.com\/2022\/03\/federal-website-accessibility-lawsuits-increased-in-2021-despite-mid-year-pandemic-lull\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer\">Federal Website Accessibility Lawsuits Increased in 2021 Despite Mid-Year Pandemic Lull<\/a>,&#8221; Seyfarth ADA Title III News &amp; Insights Blog<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The following acts provide legal protections for people with disabilities, which include the ability to have equal access to websites and materials posted on websites.<\/p>\n<ul>\n\t<li><a title=\"Opens external link in new window\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ada.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer\">Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) (www.ada.gov)<\/a>\n<ul>\n\t<li>Prohibits discrimination against people with disabilities in employment, architectural design, transportation, examinations and courses, and other services offering \u201cpublic accommodation\u201d (including websites).<\/li>\n\t<li>SUNY schools, <strong>including MCC<\/strong>, were sued in 2018 over their websites&#8217; failure to meet accessibility requirements. The Office of Civil Rights (OCR) reached an agreement with MCC over remediation efforts in March, 2021.<\/li>\n\t<li>Remediation is an <em>ongoing <\/em>process to prevent future lawsuits as we continue to be monitored by OCR.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\t<li><a title=\"Opens external link in new window\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hhs.gov\/civil-rights\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer\">Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act (www.hhs.gov\/civil-rights\/index.html)<\/a>\n<ul>\n\t<li>Covered by the Office of Civil Rights, this section of the Rehabilitation Act \u201cdefines the rights of individuals with disabilities to participate in, and have access to, program benefits and services.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\t<li><a title=\"Opens external link in new window\" href=\"https:\/\/www.section508.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer\">Section 508 of the Rehabilitation Act (www.section508.gov)<\/a>\n<ul>\n\t<li>Requires the U.S. federal government to take accessibility into account when procuring information technologies: websites, telephones, copiers, computers, and other technologies.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>It pays to know why web accessibility is important and how accessible websites help everyone. Here are ways to learn about it.<\/p>\n<h2>Watch Accessibility Videos<\/h2>\n<p>The W3C Web Accessibility Initiative&#8217;s <a title=\"Opens external link in new window\" href=\"https:\/\/www.w3.org\/WAI\/fundamentals\/accessibility-intro\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer\">Accessibility Fundamentals website<\/a> includes several short <a title=\"Opens external link in new window\" href=\"https:\/\/www.w3.org\/WAI\/perspective-videos\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer\">videos that illustrate aspects of web accessibility<\/a>. Select a video that interests you or watch them all together in this 7.5 minute <a title=\"Opens video in new window\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=3f31oufqFSM\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer\">Web Accessibility Perspectives compilation (Video)<\/a>\u00a0on YouTube.<\/p>\n<h2>Listen to a Screen Reader in Action<\/h2>\n<p>A screen reader is software that reads a web page out loud to a blind or visually impaired visitor. To get closer to this type of visitor&#8217;s experience, watch a <a title=\"Opens video in new window\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=fBuPswP0B_M&amp;feature=youtu.be\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer\">screen reader demo (Video)<\/a>, with commentary from a UC Berkeley web accessibility evangelist. In a companion video, learn <a title=\"Opens video in new window\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=gnLJhvfG5YU&amp;feature=youtu.be\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer\">why online PDFs have to be accessible (Video)<\/a>\u00a0as well.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2>Take an Online Course<\/h2>\n<p><a title=\"Opens external link in new window\" href=\"https:\/\/dequeuniversity.com\/login\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer\">Deque University<\/a> offers two online courses &#8211; <a title=\"Opens external link in new window\" href=\"https:\/\/dequeuniversity.com\/class\/fundamentals2\/toc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer\">Accessibility Fundamentals &#8211; Disabilities, Guidelines, and Laws<\/a> and <a title=\"Opens external link in new window\" href=\"https:\/\/dequeuniversity.com\/class\/content-contributors1\/toc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer\">Basic Web and Document Accessibility for Content Contributors<\/a> &#8211; that are a great starting point for learning about accessibility, who it impacts and how, and what we can do to improve the content we create. These courses are required training for <em>all<\/em> <a title=\"Opens internal link in current window\" href=\"https:\/\/sites.monroecc.edu\/web-standards\/accessibility\/web-liaisons\/\">website liaisons and web content editors<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>All MCC Employees<\/strong> are welcome to take any of the courses offered by Deque and are not limited to website accessibility.
