{"id":499,"date":"2021-04-15T15:27:08","date_gmt":"2021-04-15T15:27:08","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/sites.monroecc.edu\/news\/?p=499"},"modified":"2024-08-30T11:13:22","modified_gmt":"2024-08-30T15:13:22","slug":"2-mcc-students-receive-suny-chancellors-award-for-student-excellence","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sites.monroecc.edu\/news\/2021\/04\/15\/2-mcc-students-receive-suny-chancellors-award-for-student-excellence\/","title":{"rendered":"2 MCC Students Receive SUNY Chancellor&#8217;s Award for Student Excellence"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>BRIGHTON, N.Y.<\/strong> \u2013 The following Monroe Community College students, faculty and staff recently received awards and honors recognizing their achievements:<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Two Monroe Community College students are among 135 students from across the State University of New York (SUNY) system who recently received the 2021 Chancellor\u2019s Award for Student Excellence, the highest honor bestowed upon a student by SUNY.<\/p>\n<p>The MCC students are:<\/p>\n<ul style=\"list-style-type: square\">\n<li>\n<div id=\"attachment_502\" style=\"width: 210px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-502\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-502\" src=\"http:\/\/sites.monroecc.edu\/news\/files\/2021\/04\/Benny-Martinez-MCC-student-200x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"300\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-502\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Auven \u201cBenny\u201d Martinez III<\/p><\/div>\n<div id=\"attachment_518\" style=\"width: 222px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-518\" class=\"wp-image-518 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/sites.monroecc.edu\/news\/files\/2021\/04\/Jaelah-Bundy-212x300.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"212\" height=\"300\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-518\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Jaelah Bundy<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Jaelah Bundy of Rochester, a fine arts major and a member of Phi Theta Kappa honor society. She maintained a 4.0 GPA throughout three semesters and was an art studio monitor and a resident assistant for two semesters. She has held clothing drives and was on the leadership board of a community arts organization.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Auven \u201cBenny\u201d Martinez III of Rochester, a criminal justice major pursuing a career in politics in hopes of playing a significant role in reforming the criminal justice system. He aspires to ultimately lead Rochester as mayor. He began his leadership at MCC as a peer leader and later served as the vice president of membership for the Phi Theta Kappa honor society and the Downtown Campus student government president. He holds the position of student trustee.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The award recognizes students who have best demonstrated, and have been recognized for, their integration of academic excellence with accomplishments in the areas of leadership, athletics, civic engagement, creative and performing arts, campus involvement and\/or career achievement, and with this year\u2019s awards, the addition of diversity, equity &amp; inclusion; military service; perseverance; and special service in relation to COVID-19.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur students have sacrificed so much over the last 13 months. Now more than ever, it is imperative that we mark the milestones and celebrate the brilliance, vision, resilience, and community stewardship of SUNY\u2019s best and brightest,\u201d said Chancellor Jim Malatras. \u201cIt is my great honor to present the Chancellor\u2019s Awards for Student Excellence to these truly incredible students. Undeterred by the challenges of a once-in-a-generation health crisis, they have all overcome significant odds to pursue their academic passions, become campus and community leaders, help and inspire others, and foster a better world for us all.
