{"id":2208,"date":"2026-04-20T09:32:24","date_gmt":"2026-04-20T13:32:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sites.monroecc.edu\/news\/?p=2208"},"modified":"2026-04-10T15:04:20","modified_gmt":"2026-04-10T19:04:20","slug":"mcc-proud-meet-student-jalisia-burno","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sites.monroecc.edu\/news\/2026\/04\/20\/mcc-proud-meet-student-jalisia-burno\/","title":{"rendered":"MCC Proud: Meet Student Jalisia Burno"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In honor of National Student Leadership Week, we are profiling Monroe Community College (MCC) Student Government Association (SGA) President Jalisia (Lisa) Burno.<\/p>\n<p>Burno is in her second year at MCC, where she is studying Business Administration.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDuring my senior year of high school, I took several business courses and really enjoyed them &#8211; especially my marketing classes,\u201d said Burno. \u201cThey were engaging and informative, and they helped me realize that I wanted to pursue a career where I could combine creativity with strategy and data.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She initially chose MCC for practical reasons\u2014its affordability and location\u2014but now considers it \u201cone of the best decisions she ever made.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMCC has provided me with not only a strong academic foundation but also incredible opportunities for personal growth, leadership, and connection,\u201d said Burno. \u201cWhen I first came here, I wasn\u2019t as confident in my academic abilities, but since then, I\u2019ve made the Dean\u2019s List, stepped into leadership roles, and learned to believe in myself.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Quite simply &#8211; MCC has given her the confidence to face challenges and the tools to succeed!<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve met people from all walks of life and deeply value the diversity and community here,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n<p>In fact, that joy is clearly reflected in her role as SGA President. \u201cIt\u2019s been so much more than just business or leadership &#8211; it\u2019s been about building relationships, supporting one another, and creating positive change on campus,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Some of her most meaningful experiences in the SGA involved planning the 9\/11 Memorial Ceremony and participating in the 5K Run for Scholarships. \u201cWe spent months planning every detail together, and seeing it all come to life was a special moment that reminded me of what collaboration can achieve,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Many faculty and staff members have played a role in Burno\u2019s MCC journey, with Jodi Orel, Director of Student Life &amp; Leadership Development, having a powerful impact.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJodi never fails to speak life into students and lift them up; her positivity is contagious,\u201d said Burno. \u201cIt\u2019s not every day that you meet someone who genuinely loves what they do, but from the first moment I met her, I could tell she\u2019s passionate about her work.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In fact, Jodi\u2019s ability to remain calm under pressure, embrace change, and find the good in difficult situations is something that Burno deeply admires and aspires to emulate. \u201cI credit a big part of my MCC experience and personal growth to her,\u201d said Burno. \u201cEvery day, I\u2019m grateful that I\u2019ve had the opportunity to work side-by-side with her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Burno is preparing to graduate next month, after which she plans to pursue a bachelor\u2019s degree and later an MBA.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m currently exploring several schools but am especially interested in the University of Rochester, which has an excellent business program for both undergraduate and graduate studies,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>While she\u2019s still figuring out the exact details, Burno hopes to go into marketing analytics, where she can analyze data, understand trends, and help businesses make informed, impactful decisions.<\/p>\n<p>When asked what advice she would give current MCC students, or those considering enrolling at MCC, Burno said, \u201cUse the resources that MCC offers, advocate for yourself, and don\u2019t be afraid to take chances. Step outside your comfort zone, because sometimes the best opportunities come from moments of uncertainty.
