She said, “I enjoyed physics in high school, but wasn’t sure how far I wanted to go with it when I started college. In the end, I told myself that I would just keep taking physics classes until I didn’t enjoy it anymore, but that never happened.”

Mohr attended Niagara County Community College (now SUNY Niagara) where she earned her AS degree. She went on to earn her BS in Mathematical Physics at the University at Buffalo. After that, Mohr attended the College of William & Mary in Williamsburg, Virginia where she was awarded her PhD in Physics.

William and Mary is the second-oldest institution of higher learning in the country. It was chartered in 1693 by King William and Queen Mary of England.

Her doctoral dissertation was on Periodic Breathing and Very Long Apnea in Premature Infants. She worked with clinicians at the University of Virginia’s neonatal intensive care unit and analyzed signals that were collected by the bedside monitors.

“I had the opportunity to present my work at a conference in Budapest, Hungary,” said Mohr. “After the conference, I was able to visit Austria and Switzerland. It was an amazing experience.”

Looking back on her studies, Mohr recalled, “I loved the community college experience and it made me want to teach at a community college.”

She added, “I love teaching Modern Physics. Special Relativity never ceases to be amazing. I love teaching students about the twin paradox, where one twin takes a journey through outer space and ends up being younger than the other twin when they return.”

When asked what advice she’d give current or prospective MCC students, Mohr said, “Take advantage of the resources that MCC provides. Get to know your professors and use their office hours.”

Fun Facts About Mary:

Courtney: What’s one of the most interesting things you’ve done?

Mary: I cycled 500 miles across New York State with the Empire State Ride.

Courtney: What destination do you hope to visit one day?

Mary: Alaska.
